TORONTO– Police are investigating a shooting outside rapper Drake’s mansion in Toronto that left a security guard seriously injured.
Authorities did not confirm whether Drake was home at the time of the shooting, but said his team is cooperating. The shooting occurred around 2 a.m. Tuesday in Toronto’s affluent Bridle Path neighborhood.
Toronto Police Inspector Paul Krawczyk said video of the shooting has been recovered and the wounded guard remains hospitalized.
In recent weeks, Drake has been involved in a rap feud with Kendrick Lamar, with each artist releasing offensive songs attacking the other.
Krawczyk was asked if the dispute was a factor in the shooting and said that while investigators know, it is too early to discuss a motive.
Drake, whose real name is Aubrey Drake Graham, is one of the best-selling artists of the modern era, beginning his career as a child actor on the popular teen show “Degrassi: The Next Generation” before setting his sights on music, abandoning some of their most influential albums of any genre in the 2010s: “Take Care,” “Nothing Was the Same,” and “Views,” among them. He has released 13 number one hits throughout his career, including “God’s Plan,” “Work” with Rihanna, and “One Dance” with WizKid and Kyla.
The “Hotline Bling” singer was named the most streamed artist of the decade on Spotify, won five Grammy Awards and is often credited with ushering in the new era of hip-hop where rappers sing, weave R&B sensitivities in gender.
