PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistani security forces killed six militants in twin attacks Wednesday on their hideouts in the country’s volatile northwest region bordering Afghanistan, the military said.

Five militants were killed in the first attack in Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, the military said in a statement. It did not provide further details about the insurgents killed and only said the men were behind several previous attacks on security forces.

Another militant was killed in the second attack on a former Pakistani Taliban stronghold in the northwestern district of North Waziristan.

The statement did not provide further details about the identities of the murdered men.

These operations often target the Pakistani Taliban, who have been emboldened by the Taliban’s 2021 seizure of power in Afghanistan. Known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP, they are a separate group but a close ally of the Afghan Taliban.
