The factory in Tokyo was suspended and an investigation was also ordered.
More than one lakh packets of sliced bread were recalled in Japan after manufacturer Pasco Shikishima said rat remains were found inside some loaves, according to a report in Independent. The company is now investigating how parts of “a small animal” got into two packages of sliced bread. Pasco Shikishima also reported that no one reported falling ill after consuming Chojuku’s sliced white bread.
“We would like to deeply apologize for causing trouble to our consumers and customers. We will strengthen our quality management system to ensure there is no recurrence,” the company said in a statement.
They added: “We will recall the below products that were produced on the same factory line and in the meantime, we will stop the line in question to determine the cause and implement countermeasures. We express our sincere gratitude for your exceptional choice of our products.”
The company said they were discovered in a batch of white “chojuku” bread, which is a type of hyperfermented bread with an exceptionally chewy texture, produced by a factory located in western Tokyo prefecture. The factory in Tokyo was suspended and an investigation was also ordered.
Notably, there have been other food scares in Japan in recent years in addition to this recall. According to a report in CNN, several deaths in March prompted Japanese health authorities to order the recall of three nutritional supplements manufactured by major pharmaceutical manufacturer Kobayashi Pharmaceutical. More than a hundred other people were hospitalized.
According to Reuters, food supplier Warabeya Nichiyo said in August last year that two cases of cockroaches were discovered in rice balls supplied to a 7-Eleven convenience store in Saitama, north of Tokyo.
