Israeli whistleblowers have alleged abuses against Palestinians at a military base in Sde Teiman, which also serves as a detention center, according to a CNN report.
Three Israeli individuals who worked at the base where Palestinians are being held amid the war in Gaza, alleged that at the facility, doctors occasionally amputated prisoners’ limbs and performed medical procedures for which they were not qualified.
Doctors amputated prisoners’ limbs due to injuries caused by constant handcuffing, according to whistleblowers.
The facility is made up of two parts: one of them has enclosures where around 70 Palestinian detainees are subjected to intense physical restraint. The other is a field hospital, where injured detainees are tied to beds, wear diapers and are fed through straws, according to the report.
“They stripped us of everything that resembled human beings,” said one of the complainants who worked at the field hospital, according to CNN.
Another whistleblower said that “(the beatings) were not done to gather information.”
“They were done out of revenge,” the second whistleblower continued, according to CNN. “It was a punishment for what they (the Palestinians) did on October 7 and a punishment for their behavior on the field.”
Hamas, a Palestinian militant group, carried out the October 7 attacks against Israel, which left more than 1,100 people dead.
In response to the CNN report, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) told the media outlet that it “ensures appropriate conduct towards those detained in custody.”
“Any allegation of misconduct by IDF soldiers is examined and dealt with accordingly,” the IDF said, according to CNN. “In appropriate cases, investigations by the MPCID (Military Police Criminal Investigations Division) are opened when there is suspicion of misconduct that justifies such action.”
“Detainees are handcuffed based on their level of risk and health status,” the IDF continued. “Incidents of illegal handcuffing are not known to authorities.”
