American scientist of Indian origin Srinivas R Kulkarni wins prestigious Shaw Prize for astronomy

Srinivas R Kulkarni, an Indian-origin astronomy professor from the US, will receive the prestigious Shaw Prize for Astronomy for his groundbreaking discoveries about millisecond pulsars, gamma-ray bursts, supernovae and other variable or transient astronomical objects.

In addition to Kulkarni, who is the George Ellery Hale Professor of Astronomy and Planetary Sciences, Division of Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy at the California Institute of Technology, the other Shaw Prize recipients are Swee Lay Thein and Stuart Orkin, both from the USA, who recipient of the Shaw Prize in Life Sciences and Medicine is awarded in equal shares, and Peter Sarnak, another North American scientist who received the Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences.

“The Shaw Prize for Astronomy is awarded to Srinivas R Kulkarni, for his groundbreaking discoveries about millisecond pulsars, gamma-ray bursts, supernovae and other variable or transient astronomical objects.

His contributions to time-domain astronomy culminated in the conception, construction and leadership of the Palomar Transient Factory and its successor, the Zwicky Transient Facility, which revolutionized our understanding of the time-varying optical sky,” the Shaw Prize Foundation said Tuesday . here when announcing the Shaw Laureates for 2024.

“The Shaw Prize consists of three annual awards: Astronomy, Life Sciences and Medicine, and Mathematical Sciences, each with a monetary prize of $1.2 million. This will be the 21st year that the Prize has been awarded and the delivery is scheduled for Tuesday, November 12, in Hong Kong”, informed the Foundation.

According to his biography posted on the Caltech Division of Physics, Mathematics and Astronomy website, Mr. Kulkarni earned a master’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology in 1978 and followed it up with a doctorate from the University of California in 1983. Among his many accomplishments , he was also director of the Caltech Optical Observatories from 2006 to 2018.

According to the Shaw Prize website, Hong Kong film and television personality and philanthropist Run Run Shaw (1907-2014) founded the Shaw Foundation Hong Kong and The Sir Run Run Shaw Charitable Trust, both dedicated to promoting education, scientific and technological research, medical and wellness services, and culture and arts.
