Eleven people were killed and two others were injured in an explosion at a sugar factory in Mvomero district in eastern Tanzania, authorities said.
The explosion happened after a heavy-duty steam pipe ruptured as workers began production on Wednesday night, fire and rescue personnel said.
In addition to Tanzanians, citizens of Brazil, India, China and Kenya were among the dead, authorities say.
Alex Mkama, the regional police commander, said his team was investigating the cause of the incident.
The explosion occurred at around 01:00 local time on Thursday. [23:00 GMT Wednesday] in a factory run by Mtibwa Sugar Estates Limited, one of Tanzania’s leading sugar manufacturers.
All the deceased were electrical and mechanical employees who worked in the control room at the time, Mkama added.
Following the explosion, Mtibwa Sugar Company suspended all production activities at the factory, one of the largest in the country.
The bodies of the deceased workers were transferred to the factory hospital morgue.
