The United States announced on Friday a new tranche of military aid to Ukraine.

Washington:

The United States on Friday announced a new tranche of military aid to Ukraine, including ammunition, missiles, mines and artillery shells, as Russia presses its attack on the Kharkiv region.

Ukraine has been fighting in Kharkiv since May 10, when thousands of Moscow troops stormed the border, making its biggest territorial advances in 18 months.

“The United States today announces a significant new withdrawal of weapons and equipment to Ukraine to support the courageous Ukrainian people in defending their country,” said Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

“This $275 million package, which is part of our efforts to help Ukraine repel Russia’s attack near Kharkiv, contains urgently needed capabilities.”

Last month, US lawmakers approved a long-delayed $61 billion military aid deal for Kiev, after months of wrangling in Congress, while Ukrainian forces suffered battlefield setbacks due to shortages. ammunition and financing.

President Joe Biden has since ordered five installments of military aid to be sent to Ukraine.

“Assistance from previous packages has already reached the front lines and we will advance this new assistance as quickly as possible,” Blinken said.

Attacks in the city of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest, killed at least seven people on Thursday, local authorities said.

More than 11,000 people across the region have been evacuated since Russia began its new offensive, according to local governor Oleg Synegubov.
