Strange War: Russian Turtle Tanks

Strange War: Russian Turtle Tanks

As the war in Ukraine rages on, both sides evolve war tactics for what was once thought to be effective has proven otherwise. Of course this will continue to happen as it has in most wars, as both sides build up and fight for position at the front. One of the strangest developments recently has been the Russian “Turtle Tanks.”

A robot tank could soon hit the battlefield.

Seen in certain areas, these Turtle Tanks are often T-72s with a makeshift hull or outer hull made from rebar, corrugated iron or other welded scraps. It is supposed to help protect against widespread FPV drone attacks carried out by Ukrainian forces.

When these monstrosities were first released, some praised the innovative nature of Russian forces. They seemed to believe that these shells would prevent Ukrainian forces from destroying the tanks, giving the other side a huge advantage.

But it wasn’t exactly like that.

A major problem with Turtle Tanks is that the projectile limits cannon rotation and crew visibility. Ironically, this can make tanks more vulnerable to attack. It’s like during WWII some tanks were so heavily armored that they were slow and got stuck often, the very thing that should protect the crew became a big problem.

These tanks sometimes have rollers or plows attached to the front to trigger enemy landmines. We saw similar implements used on US and allied armored vehicles during Desert Storm, so this isn’t exactly cutting-edge.

But what is interesting is a video shared by the official X account of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, showing one of these roller turtle tanks being destroyed by what appear to be multiple landmines at the same time. How exactly this happened is unclear. It may be that Ukraine has the ability to swap some mines to remove the detonation or there will be a delay, or perhaps another innovation.

This just shows the arms race that is going on in the Ukrainian War. One side thinks they have an advantage with a new toy and the other shows that this may not be the case. This is partly why the fight continues.
