New York:
Activision, developer of Meta and Call of Duty (CoD) games, was sued by the families of victims killed in a school shooting in the United States for allegedly promoting the use of firearms to minors.
In May 2022, 18-year-old Salvador Ramos opened fire at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, killing 21.
According to the lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, both companies “knowingly exposed the shooter to the weapon, conditioned him to see it as the solution to his problems, and trained him to use it ”.
Victims’ families accused Meta and Activision of “grooming” young people and putting them on a path to violence.
“Ramos played ‘Call of Duty’ obsessively, developed skills as a shooter, and obtained rewards that only become available after a substantial investment of time,” the lawsuit alleged.
The lawsuit also alleged that the game features the AR-15 used in the shooting.
In addition to Meta and Activision, the families of Uvalde’s victims are also suing Daniel Defense, the company that manufactured the AR-15 used in the shooting.
In a statement given to the media, Activision said that “millions of people around the world enjoy video games without resorting to horrific acts.”
