UN development specialist Garry Conille arrives to Haiti to take up the post of prime minister

MIAMI– A UN development specialist tasked with restoring order in Haiti arrived in the Caribbean nation on Saturday to take up his position. new position as prime minister.

TO transition council who seeks to pave the way for an election in Haiti named Garry Conille this week. Replaces interim prime minister Michel Patricio Boisvertwhom he met upon his arrival on Saturday in the capital, Port-au-Prince, according to a government statement.

Conille has been UNICEF regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean since January 2023 and previously served as prime minister of Haiti from October 2011 to May 2012 under then-president Michel Martelly.

Gang violence continues to rise in parts of Haiti’s capital and beyond as Conille takes command of the problematic country awaiting the UN-backed deployment of a Kenyan police force and other countries.

Haiti shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic.
