North Korea has sent more garbage-filled balloons to South Korea, continuing its campaign from earlier this week, according to South Korea’s military, the Associated Press (AP) reports. reported.
The balloons, which carry “dirt”, crossed the border again on Saturday and reached several provinces, including areas of Seoul, the capital of South Korea.
About 90 balloons, containing cigarette butts, paper and plastic bags, were sent by North Korea, according to South Korean news agency Yonhap reported on Saturday, citing the Seoul military.
People were advised not to touch the balloons and to report them to the military or police.
North Korea sent about 260 balloons earlier this week that were seen in several areas of South Korea. Pyongyang said the balloons were sent in response to a campaign organized by South Korean activists and North Korean defectors who released balloons containing anti-North leaflets -Koreans and other items, according to AP.
Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, confirmed that the balloons were being sent in retaliation for the activists’ campaign. The South Korean military said it has no plans to shoot down the incoming balloons, warning against escalating tensions near the border, where tension between the two nations has risen, according to the AP.
“(We) decided it was best to let the balloons fall and recover them safely,” a spokesman for South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said Thursday, the AP reported.
