Imran Khan remains in prison with a seven-year sentence for violating Islamic law (File)
Islamabad, Pakistan:
Pakistan’s top court on Monday overturned a treason conviction against former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who remains in prison on other charges.
In the run-up to the February elections, Khan was sentenced to three prison terms for cases he claims were orchestrated to prevent his return to power.
The ruling by a two-member bench of the Islamabad High Court was announced by the court’s president, Aamer Farooq, an AFP court reporter testified.
Salman Safdar, a lawyer for Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, confirmed the acquittal.
Khan remains jailed on a seven-year sentence for violating Islamic law by marrying his wife Bushra Bibi shortly after their divorce.
He was also found guilty of corruption over gifts he received during his time as prime minister between 2018 and 2022. Although his 14-year sentence was suspended in April, the conviction remains valid.
