UK military horses injured after bolting across London in April ‘recovering with remarkable speed’

LONDON — The five military horses All of those who escaped and were injured while running through central London in April are expected to return to duty, the British Army said on Tuesday, and three of them have already returned to work.

The horses were undergoing routine exercises near Buckingham Palace on April 24 when, frightened by noise from a nearby construction site, they galloped loose through the streets of the capital, crashing into vehicles and causing chaos during the morning rush hour.

The two most seriously injured horses, Vida and Quaker, are recovering well in the field after undergoing surgeries and will return to work soon, officials said.

The other three horses, named Trojan, Tennyson and Vanquish, have returned to service and will likely be able to take part in King Charles III’s birthday parade on June 15.

“The five horses injured during the April 24 incident are recovering remarkably quickly,” said Lt. Col. Mathew Woodward.

The horses seemed “in good spirits,” the army added.

Soldiers who were injured after being thrown by horses are also recovering and will likely return to military service, officials said.

The horses were part of the Royal Cavalry, the monarch’s ceremonial guard and a feature of state functions in London. Videos of animals running wild and dazzling commuters on their way to work were widely shared on social media.
