X will continue to prohibit harmful pornographic content.
Elon Musk’s social media platform X, formerly Twitter, has officially announced a change to its content policies, now allowing pornographic material. In an affirmation, X announced the launch of updated policies regarding “Adult Content and Violent Content” on its platform. These new policies aim to provide greater “clarity” regarding the rules that govern this content and increase “transparency in their application”.
These policies replace “older policies on sensitive media and violent speech,” they said, although the principles underlying enforcement remain unchanged.
X’s policy also extends to animated and AI-generated content. The platform allows adult nudity or sexual content, including AI-generated, photographic or animated projections.
What does X mean by ‘adult’ and ‘violent’ content
They clarified that “Adult content encompasses our approach to sharing consensual sexual content and adult nudity” and “Violent content encompasses violent speech and violent media to enable a more holistic approach to combating violence in all forms.”
“Adult content” will show full or partial nudity, including close-ups of genitals, buttocks, or breasts, as well as explicit or implied sexual behavior or simulated acts such as sexual intercourse.
How to tag content in X
For users who frequently share adult content on X, the platform suggests adjusting your media settings accordingly.
This will ensure that such images and videos are placed behind a content warning, which appears before they are viewed. There is also the option to add a single content warning to individual posts.
X also said that if someone doesn’t tag their posts correctly, the platform will do it for them.
Harmful content will be prohibited
The platform will continue to prohibit harmful or non-consensual pornographic content, as well as any material that promotes the objectification of people or harm to minors. Additionally, adult content will not be permitted in profile photos, banners or other publicly visible areas.
How to report content
To report unmarked content or any other violation, use the ‘report’ option in the app.
Policy for underage users
According to the policy, users under the age of 18 or who have not provided their date of birth will not be able to view posts marked as adult content.
The decision, announced on Monday, marks a significant change in what is allowed on the platform and comes amid pressure to protect children from seeing inappropriate content on social media.
