Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday he does not expect major changes in U.S. policy toward Russia if Donald Trump wins the presidency in November, but he did not rule out a change in thinking.
Speaking to media editors at an economic forum in St. Petersburg, Putin said Moscow doesn’t care who wins, while accusing the Biden administration of making mistake after mistake and “setting fire to” the US political system and the global leadership.
“Basically, we don’t care (who wins),” he said when asked by Reuters whether he believed the outcome of the US election would make a difference to Moscow.
Calling incumbent Joe Biden a predictable old-school politician, he said Moscow would work with whoever wins and not meddle in US domestic politics.
“We never had any special ties with Mr. Trump, but the fact remains that when he was president, he began imposing massive sanctions on Russia, withdrew from the treaty on intermediate and short-range missiles,” Putin said.
“To say – I’m speaking very sincerely – that we believe that after the election something will change regarding Russia in American politics, I wouldn’t say that. We don’t think so. We don’t think anything really serious will happen.”
