US President Joe Biden also stated that he would accept the outcome of the trial.

Washington:

US President Joe Biden said he would not pardon his son, Hunter Biden, if he was found guilty of federal criminal gun charges, CNN reported.

Responding to a question in an interview with ABC’s David Muir about whether the US president would rule out pardoning Hunter Biden, the president said: “Yes.”

He also stated that he would accept the outcome of the trial, which is currently underway in Delaware, CNN reported.

Meanwhile, court proceedings have come under scrutiny over a painful time for the Biden family as Hunter struggled with drug addiction following the death of his brother Beau.

First lady Jill Biden attended the trial before traveling to France to join her husband in D-Day commemoration activities.

Previously, the White House said Biden would not pardon his son, as reported by CNN.

“I was very clear; the president will not pardon his son,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in December.

Notably, the president’s son is accused of illegally purchasing and possessing a gun while abusing or addicted to drugs, a violation of federal law.

However, he has pleaded not guilty to all three charges, although he has been open about his struggle with alcohol and crack addiction.

Special Counsel David Weiss filed these charges, CNN reported.

For the first time in US history, the son of a sitting president was tried.

Biden has previously expressed support for his son and said he is proud of his recovery from addiction.

“I am the president, but I am also a father. Jill and I love our son and are very proud of the man he is today,” the president said in a statement as the trial was underway.

“Hunter’s resilience in the face of adversity and the strength he brought to his recovery are inspiring to us. Many families have loved ones who have overcome addiction and know what we mean,” he continued.

“As president, I do not and will not comment on pending federal cases, but as a father, I have boundless love for my son, trust in him and respect for his strength. , and Jill and I will continue to support Hunter and our family with our love and support,” US President Biden added.
