“The United States stands firm with Ukraine. We will not, I repeat, give up,” he added.

Paris:

US President Joe Biden on Saturday pledged Washington’s support to Kiev in its battle against the Russian invasion, warning that Vladimir Putin “would not stop” in Ukraine.

“Putin will not stop in Ukraine,” said Biden alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, after talks in Paris.

“All of Europe will be threatened, we will not allow that to happen,” Biden told journalists during his state visit to France.

“The United States stands firm with Ukraine. We will not, I repeat, give up,” he added.

Macron told Biden in front of reporters: “I thank you, Mr President, for being the president of the number one power in the world, but for doing so with the loyalty of a partner who likes and respects Europeans.”

Both Biden and Macron met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris on Friday, pledging support for the Ukrainian cause.

The 81-year-old US president has been in France since Wednesday and participated this week in commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings that changed the course of the Second World War.

On Friday, Biden warned of the need to preserve American democracy and drew parallels between World War II and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Biden is expected to face his rival and Republican predecessor Donald Trump later this year in presidential elections that commentators predict will put US democracy to a severe test.

Trump also signaled his lack of interest in international organizations, including NATO.

“We have once again shown the world the power of allies and what we can achieve when we stand together,” Biden said.
