The man had undergone abdominal surgery before the incident occurred.

In a shocking incident, a US man’s colon was placed back into his body after it fell out following a “strong” sneeze, according to a report in New York Post Office. The 63-year-old Florida man was having breakfast with his wife at a restaurant when the incident occurred.

Notably, the man battled prostate cancer and underwent abdominal surgery before the incident occurred. On the morning of the bowel “evisceration”, he had sutures removed from his abdomen.

A recent article published in American Journal of Medical Case Reports details her unusual case and medical recovery. It read: “During breakfast, the man sneezed hard, followed by coughing. He immediately noticed a ‘wet’ sensation and pain in his lower abdomen. Looking down, he observed several loops of pink intestine protruding from his site of recent surgery.”

The man covered his exposed intestines with his shirt while his wife called an ambulance. When paramedics arrived, they saw an “approximately 3-inch vertical tear with a large amount of intestine” showing. Fortunately, the man did not lose much blood and was quickly taken to a local hospital.

“In the Emergency Department, the Urology service was consulted immediately. Vital signs were within normal limits. Pre-operative blood tests were obtained and were found to be unchanged from recent comparisons. A nasogastric tube was inserted and the patient consented to receive an exploratory laparotomy,” the newspaper added.

The eviscerated intestine was carefully placed back into the abdominal cavity by three surgeons, who also “inspected the entire length of the small intestine and noted no evidence of injury.”

To ensure that the abdomen would not open again, the three urological surgeons closed it with a sequence of figure-eight stitches, which are among the strongest closures. The 63-year-old man was hospitalized for six days and followed a normal diet before being discharged.
