More than 36,000 people have been killed in Gaza since October, in Israeli retaliation against Hamas.

Cairo:

Hamas on Monday welcomed a UN Security Council resolution supporting a proposed ceasefire in Gaza, saying it is ready to cooperate with mediators in implementing the plan’s principles.

“Hamas welcomes what is included in the Security Council resolution that affirmed the permanent ceasefire in Gaza, the complete withdrawal, the exchange of prisoners, reconstruction, the return of displaced people to their areas of residence, the rejection of any demographic change or reduction in the Gaza Strip area and the delivery of necessary aid to our people in the Strip,” the militant group said in a statement.

Hamas also said it was willing to participate in indirect negotiations on the implementation of principles “that are consistent with the demands of our people and the resistance.”

The UN Security Council on Monday adopted a US-drafted resolution supporting a proposal outlined by President Joe Biden for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Russia abstained from the vote, while the remaining 14 council members voted in favor. The US finalized its text on Sunday, after six days of negotiations between council members.
