“China is willing to work with India to push bilateral relations in the right direction”

Beijing:

Chinese Premier Li Qiang on Tuesday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his re-election for a third term, saying Beijing is willing to work with New Delhi to “push bilateral relations in the right direction”.

Li said in a message that the solid and steady development of China-India relations is not only conducive to the well-being of the two peoples, but also injects stability and positive energy into the region and the world, state news agency Xinhua reported. .

Li said, “China is willing to work with India to push bilateral relations in the right direction.”

PM Modi was sworn in as prime minister on Sunday for a record third term, leading the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.

China’s Foreign Ministry on June 5 congratulated Prime Minister Modi on the victory of the BJP-led NDA coalition in the general elections, saying both countries should look to the future to promote bilateral relations, which have been frozen since the incident of Galwan four years ago, on a healthy and stable track.

Relations between the two countries have reached a low level, except with regard to trade, since the standoff on Ladakh’s eastern border broke out on May 5, 2020, following a violent clash in the Pangong Tso (lake) area near from Galwan.

“We take note of the results of India’s general elections and congratulate the victory of the BJP led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the National Democratic Alliance,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a press conference press here.

A healthy and stable relationship between China and India is in the interests of both countries and is conducive to peace and development in this region and beyond, Mao said while responding to a question from official media seeking comments from China on China’s victory. Modi.

China is willing to work with India to act in the fundamental interests of the two countries and two peoples, keep in mind the overall interest of our ties, look to the future and advance bilateral relations on a healthy and stable path, she said.

A day later, China protested Prime Minister Modi’s comment that he hoped to have closer ties with Taiwan.

PM Modi’s remarks came in response to a congratulatory message from Taiwan President Lai Ching-te on his electoral victory.

China views Taiwan as a rebellious province that must be reunified with the mainland, even by force.

India is pressuring the People’s Liberation Army to withdraw from the Depsang and Demchok areas, maintaining that there can be no restoration of normalcy in its relations with China as long as the state of the borders remains abnormal.

For its part, China continues to maintain that the border issue does not represent the entirety of China-India relations and that it must be appropriately addressed in bilateral relations and managed appropriately.

Once the Modi government begins its third term, attention is expected to turn to holding the 22nd round of Corps Commander-level talks to resolve the impasse over disengagement in Depsang and Demchok areas to revive relations .

Ahead of India’s parliamentary elections, China last month appointed senior diplomat Xu Feihong as its new ambassador to New Delhi after an 18-month delay.
