Rome Italy:
The Italian island of Capri banned tourists from landing on Saturday after problems with the mainland’s water supply threatened to leave the holiday spot parched.
Capri Mayor Paolo Falco’s ban forced several ferries going from Naples and Sorrento to the island in southern Italy to turn back.
The company in charge of supplying the island with water said there was a technical problem on the mainland on Thursday and, although this has since been resolved, problems with Capri’s supply persist.
Falco warned of “a real emergency” and said that although there was still water in most of the island on Friday, local tanks were “running out”.
“The emergency would be worsened by the arrival of thousands of tourists who arrive daily in Capri,” he said.
Local residents could collect up to 25 liters of drinking water per family in a tanker, he said.
The ban, which does not apply to residents, will remain in effect until further notice.
Capri, in the Bay of Naples, is famous for its white villas, its coastline full of coves and its luxury hotels. There are around 13,000 permanent residents, but a large number of day-trippers in the summer months.
