The Labor Party is predicted to win a landslide victory on Thursday night, ending 14 years of Conservative Party rule in the UK.
Labor is on track to win 410 seats in the British House of Commons, a sizeable margin above the 326 seats needed to win a majority, according to a report. national poll conducted by Ipsos for the BBC, ITV News and Sky News.
The Conservatives are expected to win 131 of the 650 seats, with smaller parties taking up the remainder.
These polls, carried out at polling stations across the UK, have historically provided an accurate picture of the final election results.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the Conservative leader, called a surprise early election six weeks ago. The timing of the announcement raised suspicions, given the party’s relative unpopularity in the country.
The Conservatives have weathered several scandals, including Liz Truss’ brief tenure and Boris Johnson’s resignation amid allegations he held parties at 10 Downing St.
A Labor victory would also counter a recent trend to the right in other European countries, such as France. But these same populist tendencies are strong in the UK, and polls suggest that voters have acted on well-publicized dissatisfaction with the Conservatives’ handling of a range of issues, including high living costs and immigration levels.
Labor leader Keir Starmer is expected to become the country’s next prime minister.
“To everyone who campaigned for Labor in this election, to everyone who voted for us and put their trust in our new Labor Party – thank you,” Starmer wrote on social platform.
