LONDON — Human remains found in two suitcases discovered near a bridge in the southwestern English city of Bristol belong to two adult men, police said Friday.

The search for a man seen behaving suspiciously before Wednesday’s discovery has been expanded. He is believed to have traveled from London on the same day and London’s Metropolitan Police are now leading the investigation.

The victims have not yet been formally identified but are both believed to be adults. An autopsy was deemed “inconclusive,” while a second post-mortem examination is ongoing.

A crime scene has been set up in the Shepherd’s Bush neighborhood of west London. Police urged the public to call emergency services if they spot the suspect.

“Don’t go near him,” said Deputy Assistant Commissioner Andy Valentine, who is leading the investigation for the Met.

Avon and Somerset Police officers arrived at the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge around midnight on Wednesday, 10 minutes after receiving reports of a man behaving strangely. But the man, who had traveled there by taxi, had already left.

The iconic bridge spans the Avon Gorge and was designed by noted Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It was inaugurated in 1864.

“We recognize that this has caused significant concern to residents of the Clifton area and will cause concern to those living and working in west London,” Mr Valentine said. “In the coming days there will be additional officers patrolling the area and I would encourage anyone who has any concerns to speak to them.”
