ISLAMABAD– Thousands of supporters of a radical Pakistani political party demonstrated near the capital, Islamabad, on Saturday, denouncing Israeli attacks on Gaza and urging the government to send more aid to the Palestinians.
The protesters also demanded that Pakistan declare Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “terrorist.” There was no immediate response from the government following the demonstration in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.
Pakistan does not have diplomatic relations with Israel. Pakistan has been calling for a ceasefire in the nine-month war between Israel and Hamas, and in recent months has sent aid items to Palestinians in Gaza.
Saad Rizvi, leader of the Islamist party Tehreek-e-Labiak Pakistan, which led the demonstration, said the sit-in protest would continue as long as the government did not accept their demands.
Hundreds of police were deployed near the demonstration, which took place as militant attacks increase in Pakistan.
