Donald Trump said he was glad he didn’t have to die for an iconic image.

A day after Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt at his final campaign rally, former US President Donald Trump praised Secret Service employees for their heroic actions.

“They killed him (the shooter) with a shot right between the eyes,” he told the New York Post in an interview. “They did a fantastic job,” he added.

“It’s surreal for all of us,” he said.

Donald Trump told the publication he would be dead if he hadn’t tilted his head slightly to the right to read a graphic while speaking at the rally.

“I shouldn’t be here, I should be dead,” Trump told the New York Post.

Donald Trump told the New York Post that as Secret Service agents led him off the stage, he still wanted to continue speaking to his supporters.

“I just wanted to keep talking, but I just got shot,” he said.

The 78-year-old had just begun his speech during a campaign rally Saturday in Butler, Pennsylvania, when shots rang out and one of the bullets hit his ear.

A moment of horrific political violence at the rally instantly turned into a piece of Donald Trump iconography that will likely boost his presidential bid.

Images of a defiant Trump — with his fist raised over his head and his right ear bloodied, as Secret Service agents surround him and the American flag flutters in the background — are flashing across social media and television.

He said he was glad he didn’t have to die for an iconic photo. “A lot of people say it’s the most iconic photo they’ve ever seen. They’re right, and I didn’t die. Normally, you have to die to have an iconic photo,” Trump told the New York Post.
