New Delhi:

Ian Cameron, former chief designer of Rolls-Royce and expert on vintage cars, was killed in his $3 million mansion in Germany after being stabbed by a man during an attempted robbery.

The 74-year-old British citizen was living with his wife Verena Kloos in Herrsching, Germany, on Lake Ammersee, during the incident. Kloos escaped the attack by climbing a wall and landing at his neighbor’s house, where he informed the police.

The power cables in the garage of Ian Cameron’s home, where valuables were kept, were deliberately cut, according to CCTV evidence.

“The investigation suggests this was a violent crime,” police officials said.

Ian Cameron played a “significant” role in the design of iconic Rolls-Royce vehicles such as the Ghost, Phantom and 3 Series.

Ian Cameron took on the role of leader of the Rolls-Royce design team after BMW acquired Rolls-Royce’s automotive business in 1998.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by the news about our former Rolls-Royce designer. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during these difficult times,” BMW said in a statement to Automotive News.

“Ian played a significant role in the formation of Rolls-Royce from when it was acquired by the BMW Group and moved to its home in Goodwood, West Sussex. During Ian’s tenure he led the design team for all models in the family Phantom and Ghost, creating completely contemporary cars that remain sympathetic to the brand’s design lineage,” the automaker added.

The suspect’s height is estimated to be between 180 and 190 cm (5 ft 9 in to 6 ft 2 in). He wears light pants, a dark blue sweatshirt, yellowish-green gloves and a red backpack, according to police descriptions.

A manhunt has been launched to locate the suspect who is on the run. Dogs and a helicopter are helping search teams thoroughly examine the area to capture the killer.
