A Kiev official says Ukraine’s military has withdrawn from a village in the eastern Donetsk region, handing over another frontline position as Russian forces bombard Ukrainian defenses in a relentless attack.
Kyiv, Ukraine. Ukraine’s military has withdrawn from the village of Urozhaine in the eastern Donetsk region, an official said Thursday, handing over another frontline position as Russian forces bombard Ukrainian defenses in a relentless attack.
The village was reduced to rubble, which “made it impossible to maintain positions there,” Nazar Voloshyn, a spokesman for local ground forces, told The Associated Press in a written message. He did not say when the withdrawal occurred.
Russia seized Urozhaine in the first days of war That began after Russia’s large-scale invasion of its neighbor in February 2022. Ukrainian troops recaptured it almost a year ago. Russia’s Defense Ministry said its army retook the village several days ago.
Russia has deployed devastating firepower as it pursues a summer offensive which has reduced cities and towns to ruins, denying the Ukrainians defensive cover. Despite a valiant defense, analysts say, Ukrainian forces are being pushed back in some places along the front line by the Kremlin’s larger and better-equipped army.
Ukraine’s firepower has improved since U.S. lawmakers passed a much-needed military aid package this spring, but it is still not coming fast enough to stop the Russian advance, especially in Donetsk.
Leaders from all over Europe met in England Thursday to discuss European security and more aid for Ukraine.
kyiv employs a bend but don’t break strategy to buy time until he can bring more Western weapons and ammunition to the front. By giving up some territory, Ukraine has been able to fight from better-defended positions, analysts and army officials say.
