Kenya’s president has announced a plan to form a new “broad-based government” after weeks of deadly anti-government protests sparked by an unpopular tax law.
However, six of the 11 ministers proposed by President William Ruto in Friday’s speech were from the cabinet he sacked last week.
In dismissing this cabinet, Ruto said the move came after “reflection and listening to Kenyans”.
On Friday, he said the “crisis” Kenya was going through was smaller than the “opportunity” the country faced.
The demonstrations began in response the tax goes up but after the government withdrew these proposals, the predominantly young protesters expanded their demands.
Recently, they have been calling for President Ruto to resign.
After Ruto dismissed his cabinet last Thursday, Kenya’s police chief resigned.
Human rights groups have accused police of shooting dozens of protesters, some fatally, and of kidnapping or arbitrarily arresting hundreds of others.
On Friday, Ruto said the 11 ministers he proposed were a “first batch” who would have to be approved by lawmakers in the National Assembly before being appointed.
