South Korea’s military has decided to resume its 24-hour loudspeaker broadcast

Seoul:

North Korea on Sunday launched balloons carrying trash toward South Korea, the South Korean military said, declaring it would respond with “large-scale” loudspeaker broadcasts.

The South Korean military said the North’s actions that raise tensions near the heavily armed border could have fatal consequences, adding that the North Korean regime would bear sole responsibility.

“As we have warned several times, the military will carry out loudspeaker broadcasts on a large scale and on all fronts from 1pm today,” the South’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said, calling the North’s balloon launch vulgar and shameful. .

Activists and defectors in South Korea have been sending their own balloons carrying propaganda leaflets and other items to North Korea for years, angering Pyongyang.

Earlier this week, South Korea’s military decided to resume its 24-hour loudspeaker broadcast campaign targeting North Korea in response to what it called Pyongyang’s despicable balloon launch carrying trash across the country. border.

Since May, North Korea has been floating thousands of balloons with trash bags attached to them, which has become a new source of tension between the two Koreas.

Raucous propaganda, world news and K-pop music, broadcasts from South Korea are considered by military officials and activists to be an effective form of psychological warfare.
