Trump and Kim Jong Un had two meetings in 2019 and one in 2018.

Former US President Donald Trump recently said that Kim Jong Un, leader of North Korea, wants him to win the 2024 presidential race for the White House. He commented as much during the last night of the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee. “But when we go back (to the White House), I get along with him,” Trump said, according to a report in News week.

“He would also like to see me back. I think he misses me, if you want to know the truth,” he added. Citing his interactions with the North Korean leader and Russia’s Vladimir Putin, he has positioned himself as the ideal candidate to deal with geopolitical problems involving North Korea and Russia and bring an end to the conflicts.

He also stated in his speech that although while in office he “halted North Korea’s missile launches”, the country is now “taking action again”.

During his presidency, Trump frequently referred to Kim Jong Un as “Little Rocket Man,” a nickname that highlighted Kim’s ambitions for nuclear weapons and missile testing. Even when there was initially hostility and heated confrontations, Trump ended up adopting a more diplomatic stance.

In 2018, following his comment on ‘Rocket Man’, Donald Trump reportedly sent a signed CD of Elton John’s song ‘Rocket Man’ to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who was visiting North Korea to advance in denuclearization negotiations with Kim. Jong-un and establish a timeline for the denuclearization process.

Speaking on the ‘Full Send Podcast,’ Trump said the funny gift for Kim worked to steer the relationship between North and South Korea in a positive direction. “I asked him, ‘Have you ever heard of the song Rocket Man?’ when I was with him, he said, ‘No, no, no,'” Trump recalled. “Have you ever heard of Elton John? ‘No, no, no.’ I actually gave him the song ‘Rocket Man,’ which is a really good Elton John song.” he added.

“I gave him a tape… frankly, I didn’t show that it was made in South Korea. The record – it said ‘South Korea.’ I said, ‘Take it off.’ We carved it,” Trump joked.

The CD then paved the way for the controversial 2019 meeting with the dictator. The meeting made Donald Trump the first sitting US president to cross into North Korea.

Meanwhile, on the podcast, Trump also called Kim Jong-un a “smart, cunning and ruthless person.” “But I got to know him very well,” he said, according to Newsweek. “And I think we would have had a nuclear war, if Obama had managed to stay or if the crooked Hillary Clinton had become president, we would have had a nuclear war with North Korea,” Trump added.
