Beirut:

Lebanon’s Hezbollah said on Sunday it fired Katyusha rockets into northern Israel in response to an Israeli attack overnight that state media said hit a weapons depot and injured six people.

Hezbollah has been negotiating almost daily cross-border fire with Israeli forces in support of Hamas since the Palestinian militant group’s attack on southern Israel on October 7 triggered war in the Gaza Strip.

Iran-backed Hezbollah said it attacked the Dafna area of northern Israel with Katyusha rockets “in response to attacks by the Israeli enemy that targeted civilians in the city of Adloun, injuring several of them.”

This comes after the Israeli military said its air force “attacked two Hezbollah weapons storage facilities in southern Lebanon, containing rockets and additional weaponry.”

On Saturday night, Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency said “the Israeli enemy launched an attack” on the town of Adloun, about 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the border with Israel, later saying the target was ” an ammunition depot.”

“Six civilians suffered moderate injuries,” the NNA said on Sunday, revising the previous night’s figure of three.

Rockets were still exploding about an hour after the attack was first reported, the NNA said, with videos circulating online showing several large explosions in Adloun.

“Shrapnel from the explosions flew to neighboring villages,” the NNA said.

Hezbollah said on Sunday in separate statements that three of its fighters had been killed.

Earlier on Saturday, Hezbollah and its Palestinian ally Hamas fired rockets and explosive-laden drones at Israeli positions.

Hezbollah said it fired “dozens of Katyusha rockets” toward northern Israel “in response” to an attack blamed on Israel that injured civilians.

Hamas’ armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, said it also fired a salvo of rockets from southern Lebanon toward an Israeli military position in the Upper Galilee.

Violence since October has killed at least 518 people in Lebanon, according to an AFP report. Most of the dead were combatants, but they included at least 104 civilians.

On the Israeli side, 18 soldiers and 13 civilians were killed, according to Israeli authorities.
