Bangladeshi police detectives on Friday forced the discharge of three student protest leaders accused of deadly riots from hospital by taking them to an unknown location, officials told AFP.
Asif Mahmud, Nahid Islam and Abu Baker Majumder are all members of Students Against Discrimination, the group responsible for organizing recent street rallies against public employee hiring rules.
At least 193 people were killed in the police crackdown and ensuing clashes, according to an AFP casualty count reported by police and hospitals, in some of the worst unrest of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s tenure.
The trio were being treated for injuries they said were caused by torture in previous police custody at a hospital in the capital, Dhaka.
“They took them from us,” Anwara Begum Lucky, a supervisor at Gonoshasthaya hospital, told AFP. “The men were from the Detective Bureau.”
She added that she did not want to dismiss the student leaders, but the police pressured the hospital chief to do so.
Islam’s older sister, Fatema Tasnim, told AFP at the hospital that six plainclothes detectives took the three men away.
