Explosions heard in Iran as ‘Israel launches retaliatory strike’ after vowing revenge on Tehran

ISRAELI missiles reportedly hit a site in Iran in retaliation, according to US officials.

Senior US officials confirmed to multiple news agencies on Thursday that missiles were launched towards Iran on Friday morning local time.

There were additional explosions reported in Iraq and Syria, according to NPR.

However, a senior US official has not confirmed ABC news if additional locations in Iraq and Syria were also hit.

Explosions were reportedly heard in the city of Isfahan – about 340 kilometers south of Tehran, according to the report. Associated Press.

At the same time, commercial flights were seen changing route over western Iran without providing any explanation.

Shortly after, all flights to Tehran, Isfahan and Shiraz were suspended, CNN reportedquoting the Iranian public relations director of an airport company.

The flights have not been officially cancelled.

“Passengers should check their flight information before departure,” said the director.

The extent of damage caused by the reported attack, as well as the weapons used, were not immediately clear.

The alleged missile attack comes almost a week after Iran launched an attack on Israel comprising more than 300 ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and attack drones.

Most of the missiles were intercepted or caused little damage to Israel.

At the time, Iran claimed the launch was in self-defense, alleging that Israel killed seven of its Revolutionary Guards during an attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, on April 1.

An Iranian commander was killed in the attack.

Israel previously warned of an “imminent” retaliatory response to the weekend attack.

An IDF official said such an attack would be “coordinated with the Americans.”

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council also promised to retaliate against Israel if a counterattack was launched.
