Republican candidate Donald Trump has told Christians that if they vote for him in November’s presidential election, he will fix everything so well that they won’t have to vote again.
Trump was speaking at an event in Florida organized by the conservative group Turning Point Action.
“Christians, you have to go out and vote. You won’t have to do that anymore. Four more years, you know what, everything will be fixed, everything will be fine. You won’t have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians, I love you Christians, I’m a Christian, I love you, come out, you’ve got to go out and vote in four years, you won’t have to vote again, we’ll work it out so well we won’t have to vote,” Trump said.
It’s unclear what the former president, who faces charges of inciting the 2020 Capitol riots and allegedly trying to overturn his 2022 election defeat, meant by those remarks.
Kamala Harris’ campaign did not address the comments directly, but spokesman Jason Singer described her overall speech as “bizarre” and “retrograde.”
Trump had previously said he would be a dictator for a day to close the southern border with Mexico if he returned to power in November. He later downplayed his comments as a joke.
The US presidential race intensified after President Joe Biden was replaced by his running mate, Kamala Harris, as the Democratic nominee last week. Harris’ entry into the race largely erased Trump’s lead, according to recent opinion polls.
