BEIJING — At least 30 people have died and another 35 are missing in a southeastern Chinese city after days of heavy rain associated with a tropical storm, state media said on Thursday.

The death toll rose sharply from the four deaths previously reported in villages in Zixing, a city in Hunan province. Besides, a landslide of the same rains It killed 15 people on Sunday in another part of the province.

Earlier this week, state broadcaster CCTV showed the use of helicopters to bring relief supplies to severely flooded areas in Zixing.

As of midday Thursday, roads, electricity and communications had largely been restored in the city’s eight worst-affected municipalities, state media said.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang, visiting flood-affected villages in Zixing, urged all-out efforts to find the missing while search and rescue efforts continued.

The days of torrential rain were induced by Tropical Storm Gaemi after it made landfall in China at typhoon strength late last week, the official Xinhua news agency said.

So far 48 deaths have been reported, all in Hunan. The bodies of three other people, believed to have been victims of a landslide, were found on Monday in the city of Chenzhou.

Tropical Storm Gaemi also brought heavy rain to northeastern China and North Korea, causing the Yalu River, which divides the two countries, to swell. Severe flooding was reported in the Chinese border town of Dandong and on the north korean side.
