Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has been selected as the lead astronaut for the upcoming Indo-US mission to the International Space Station (ISS). He is the youngest of ISRO’s designated astronauts.

Here are five facts about Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla

  1. He was born in Lucknow on October 10, 1985 and was a wing commander before recently being promoted to group captain.

  2. He is an alumnus of the National Defense Academy and was commissioned on 17 June 2006 in the fighter line of the Indian Air Force.

  3. He will fly on the Axiom-4 flight using the Space-X rocket and Crew Dragon.

  4. He underwent a Fighter Combat Leader course from the prestigious Tactics and Combat Development Establishment (TACDE) school. He is also a test pilot with approximately 2,000 hours of flying experience.

  5. He has flown a variety of aircraft including Su-30 MKI, MiG-21, MiG-29, Jaguar, BAe Hawk, Domnier and An-32.
