New protests began today over a controversial quota in Bangladesh

New Delhi:
India has asked its citizens living in Bangladesh to stay in touch and remain alert after 32 people were killed in fresh clashes between protesters and supporters of the ruling Awami League. Dozens were also injured in violent clashes today.

  1. “All Indian citizens including students living in the jurisdiction of the Assistant High Commission of India, Sylhet should contact this office and are advised to remain alert. In case of emergency, please contact +88-01313076402,” the Assistant High Commissioner said in a post on X.

  2. Protests over government jobs quota resumed today with demands for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign.

  3. A few days ago, more than 200 people were killed in violent clashes between the police and, mostly, student protesters who were demanding an end to the controversial quota system that reserved 30 percent of public jobs for families of veterans who fought in the War of Independence of Bangladesh in 1971.

  4. Clashes broke out this morning when protesters taking part in a non-cooperation program to demand the government’s resignation faced opposition from supporters of the Awami League, Chhatra League and Jubo League activists, news agency PTI reported.

  5. The Bangladesh Home Ministry has decided to impose an indefinite curfew across the country from 6pm today. Prime Minister Hasina said those carrying out sabotage across Bangladesh in the name of protests are not students but terrorists and urged people to suppress them with a firm hand.

  6. Ms. Hasina called a meeting of the National Security Affairs Committee at Ganabhaban. “I appeal to compatriots to suppress these terrorists with a firm hand,” she said. The meeting was attended by the heads of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police and other bodies.

  7. In Rangpur, four Awami League supporters were killed and more than 100 people were injured, while two people were killed in Bogra and Magura, where a Chhatra Dal leader was among the dead, local media reported,

  8. Protesters under the banner of the Student Anti-Discrimination Movement chanted slogans calling for Ms. Hasina’s resignation and justice for those killed in the recent violence surrounding the quota reform protests, news portal Bdnews24 reported.

  9. According to the Daily Star newspaper, several vehicles of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) were set on fire on Sunday by unidentified persons. People carrying batons were seen vandalizing cars, ambulances, motorcycles and buses.

  10. Protesters rejected Hasina’s invitation for a dialogue aimed at quelling the escalating violence and consolidated their demands into a unified call for the government’s resignation.
