Small but cozy

It is believed that William and Kate also wanted to leave the London “aquarium” to create more privacy for their children.

With your cotton candy pink exterior and rolling terrain, the royal apartment looks like something out of a fairy tale.

William and Kate’s charming Adelaide Cottage couldn’t be more different from their 20-bedroom, four-story apartment in Kensington, which they still use as staff offices.

It has just four bedrooms – one for George, Charlotte and Louis and the royal couple.

Built in 1831, it featured parts of the Prince Regent’s Royal Lodge of the time, which was partially demolished and reused for Princess Adelaide’s country house.

The Grade II listed property underwent major renovations in 2015 and has been a freehold property since 1945.

No resident staff

The story behind Adelaide Cottage

WILLIAM and Kate’s new home was built in 1831 for Queen Adelaide, wife of King William IV.

The couple never produced an heir – so when William died in 1837, the throne went to his niece, Victoria.

Victoria often visited the house for tea and cake.

A century later, the property became the home of party captain Peter Townsend, who had an affair with the Queen’s current sister, Margaret.

The pair used to go horse riding in Windsor Great Park but were not allowed to get married because he was divorced.

Adelaide Cottage was designed by Sir Jeffry Wyatville and incorporated building materials from the nearby Royal Lodge, where Andy and Sarah Ferguson now live.

Descriptions of the Gales’ new house in 1831 describe it as “chastely elegant” and say that “its location affords charming shade at any time of the day”.

George, Charlotte and Louis will enjoy the well-kept gardens, which have changed little in 200 years.

Lots of outdoor space

Sources said the sports-loving couple dreamed of having a “modest” house with a garden so the children could play together outdoors – and they appeared to have achieved that goal.

Adelaide Cottage is situated in the heart of the 655-acre Windsor Home Park estate, so there is plenty of space for children to run around and stroll along the Waterfront.

We can see from a history painting of the garden that was once a botanical paradise.
