WIMBLEDON is back and the question on everyone’s lips is whether Princess Kate will be attending this year.
Legendary former royal correspondent Charles Rae told The Sun’s Royal Exclusive that there is a big reason why Wimbledon organizers would “love” to have her back.
Speaking to The Sun’s royal editor, Matt Wilkinson, he stated: “I think people from Wimbledon I would love to have Catherine back because it would increase the audience and increase people’s presence there.
“The problem is that when we found out about her cancer, several people were marking when she would return.
“She would be back at the end of April, she would be back for Trooping or whatever.
“We just don’t know when she’ll be back.”
It has not been confirmed whether Princess Kate – who is the patron saint of All England Gram tennis and Croquet Club – will be present at the two-week sporting event.
Traditionally, the avid tennis fan Princess of Wales will watch several matches in the Royal Box and later present the champions with their trophies at the end of the tournament.
The royal mother of three is currently taking a step back from royal duties as she undergoes cancer treatment.
Charles added: “It would be Cool to think she could at least spend a day or two at Wimbledon, but if she doesn’t, well then we’ll just have to be patient because I’m hoping she’ll come back one day.
The everything England Club president Debbie Jevans confirmed they are “remaining flexible” about who will present the trophies to the Wimbledon champions this year.
Debbie said Telegraph sport: “We hope that the Princess of Wales can present the trophies as Patron of the Club, but she health and recovery is the priority.
“We don’t know what we don’t know. All we’ve said is we’ll work with her and give her as much flexibility as possible.”
She added: “I don’t know who would present the trophies as an alternative – that is something to consider closer to the date if necessary.
“We will remain flexible. When we hear it, we’ll think about what the right thing to do is.”
Avid tennis fan
Kate has rarely missed Wimbledon since she got married Prince William.
She skipped the championships in 2013 – and missed out on Andy Murray’s first Wimbledon win – but that was due to the fact she was pregnant with Prince George at the time.
Princess Kate used to take tennis lessons at the elite Hurlingham Club in Fulhamand even organized training sessions for Prince George with tennis legend Roger Federer.
During an appearance on BBC documentarySue Barker: Our Wimbledon, in 2017, Kate said: “I watched Wimbledon, it was part of my growing up. It’s an essential part of English summerand I think that really inspires young people, it inspired me when I was younger to get involved in the game.
“It hasn’t changed either, I think that’s what’s so wonderful.”
Wimbledon takes place over 14 days and this year runs from Monday 1 July to Sunday 14 July, with the women’s singles final scheduled for the last Saturday and the men’s singles final on the last day.
