PRINCE William and his wife Kate have been hailed for helping to raise £13 million for good causes with an annual charity polo match.

O Prince in Wales is set to participate, but his wife – who is being treated for cancer – will not be joining him.

Last year, William was part of the winning team at the Royal Charity Polo Cup, held at the Guards Polo Club in Windsor, Berks.

And Kate was present to present the trophy to her husband.

The day raised £1 million for “well-deserved causes that the Prince and Princess are passionate about”.

It will be the 13th time William has competed in the event, which raised a total of £13 million.

Wales Air Ambulance, of which William is a patron, was among the beneficiaries last year, receiving a check for £115,000.

Chief executive Dr Sue Barnes said: “We are one of HRH The Prince of Wales’s newest patrons and it was an honor to be one of the charities chosen to benefit from this event.

“The Prince takes a deep and proactive interest in our charity and, as a former air ambulance pilot, understands better than anyone the importance of such a service.

“He has become a passionate member of the Wales Air Ambulance family.

“We are thrilled to be chosen as Polo Cup recipients again this year.”

Mountain Rescue England and Wales, visited by the royal couple last year, also received much-needed cash from the event.

Other charities receiving money this year include the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Earlier this year, Wills handed out CBEs to MND charity heroes Rob Burrow, who died in June aged 41, and his best friend Kevin Sinfield.

Yesterday, Prince William was in Lambeth, south London, to mark the first year of his Homewards initiative to combat homelessness.
