Keir Starmer to ‘take the brakes off Britain’ and tear up planning rules in race for growth in King’s Speech

SIR Keir Starmer will “brake Britain” in a race for growth in today’s King’s Speech.

The new prime minister promises to scrap planning rules in a drive to build homes and create jobs that will see young people rise to ownership.

He has previously said he would “fight the blockers” preventing developments from starting in a bid to build 1.5 million new homes in his first term.

Sir Keir is planning a decade of national renewal as King Charles reads out his legislative agenda of 35 bills, which also includes the nationalization of rail services.

He will set out plans for a criminal operation to ban dangerous blades and give anti-terrorism powers to officers dealing with illegal immigration.

He said: “Now is the time to pump the brakes in Britain. For too long people have been held back, their paths determined by where they came from – rather than their talents and hard work.

“I am determined to create wealth for people across the country. My government is focused on supporting this aspiration.

“Today’s new laws will take back control and lay the foundations for real change, creating wealth in every community and improving people’s circumstances – supporting their ambitions, hopes and dreams.”

Under Sir Keir’s proposals, 1.5 million new homes built over five years and critical energy infrastructure will unlock economic growth.

Decisions on major infrastructure projects in areas such as transport, technology and energy will be made at the national level, rather than being tied up in local bureaucracy for years.

An English Devolution Bill will be unveiled to transfer powers to local leaders.

And a new rail system will be established that will make all services public property once their current agreements end or they fail to meet their commitments.

Ministers believe a more efficient service will help people get to work on time and therefore increase productivity.

Fares and ticketing systems will be simplified by Great British Railways, which will provide automatic compensation for poor service.
