SANDRINGHAM Estate has links with British monarchs dating back to 1862.

The adored the late Queen Elizabeth’s private country home it is steeped in the history of the Royal Family and was passed on to King Charles after his death.

Where is Sandringham Estate?

Located in Norfolk, Sandringham Estate was purchased as a country home for Edward VII, so Prince in Walesand his future wife, Alexandra de Denmark in 1862.

The Grade II listed house was then passed to the late Queen’s father, George VI, in 1900, who passed it on to her.

To this day, the impressive property remains the private property of the Royal Family.

It was passed on to King Charles following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September 2022.

Who lives on Sandringham Estate?

No one from the royal family lives permanently on the Sandringham Estate, but the property has historically been their preferred residence at Christmas and New Year.

In 1957, Queen Elizabeth II gave her first Christmas message broadcast on the estate’s television.

This was 25 years after the first radio broadcast from home, made by his grandfather, Edward VIII.

Prince Philip used to stay at Wood Farm, a farmhouse on the estate, after retiring from royal duties in 2017.

According to the property’s website, more than 200 people live on the property, including gamekeepers, gardeners, farmers, as well as workers at the Sandringham sawmill and its litter juice pressing plant.

The house is a Grade II listed building and the landscaped gardens, parkland and woodland are on the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.

Each monarch who lived at Sandringham developed the land to their liking and infused it with a bit of their personality.

As the property’s website explains: “A densely planted bush with a shady woodland walk was instigated by Queen Elizabeth II in the late 1960s.”

Her Majesty brought a collection of rhododendrons, camellias and magnolias from Windsor, another of her favorite residences.

They were planted at Sandringham in the hope of creating “more interest, shelter and privacy in the garden”.

After taking over the property, King Charles also implemented several changes to the property.

The monarch is known for his message of sustainability and is said to have installed bird boxes on the property and introduced around 500 rare breed cattle.

How much is the Sandringham estate worth?

In 1862, Sandringham was purchased by the Royal Family for £220,000.

Fast forward more than 160 years and the impressive property is worth a staggering amount.

As of July 2024, Sandringham Estate is valued at around £60 million.

Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton have a 10-bedroom property on the Sandringham Estate known as Anmer Hall.

It was gifted to them by the late Queen following the royal couple’s wedding in 2011 and was renovated for £1.5 million.

Is Sandringham open to the public?

Queen Elizabeth II opened the house to the public during her Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1977.

Visitors can visit the property at certain times of the year as long as they purchase tickets.

The house and gardens are open to the public during the spring and summer months, but the property has not yet revealed opening dates in 2024.

However, visitors can explore the surrounding Royal Parkland year-round.

This also includes the opportunity to have afternoon tea on the patio.

Can you live on the Sandringham estate?

The Sandringham Estate often has properties available to rent in 13 villages from Wolferton to Bircham.

The complex’s housing policy is to rent properties as their main residence, prioritizing those who live and work there.

Properties are not rented on a first-come, first-served basis, but rather based on which potential tenant is best suited for the property.

Properties are let to tenants on a guaranteed short-term let basis for a minimum period of twelve months and all properties are let unfurnished.
