HARRY and Meghan began an unofficial three-day trip to Nigeria with a day of activities typical of a royal visit.

The California-based couple stepped down as active members of the Royal Family more than four years ago.

Harry said the trip was due to the bonds forged through their Invictus Games.

But the first day was described as following the “old school royal trip”.

The pair saw traditional dancers, gave a speech about health at a school, they signed a visitors’ book and were received by the Nigerian Minister of Defense.

Images from their visit are strikingly similar to those from the couple’s royal trip to South Africa in 2019 – five months before Megxit – and an official trip to Australia a year earlier.

Royal author Rob Jobson, who has attended numerous royal tours over 33 years, said: “This feels like a missed opportunity because they could be serving King and Country, GB Plc and the Commonwealth.

“Unfortunately, they decided to do it all themselves, but this tour doesn’t have the same depth and impact that an official real tour would have.”

Jack Royston, Newsweek’s chief royal correspondent, told The Sun’s new program Royal Exclusive: “It’s very close to an old-school royal tour.

“The things they are doing are very similar to what we travel around watching the Royal Family do.

“They already went to school, so it’s basically that real old-school playbook.”

The couple looked relaxed as they were welcomed with banners reading “Welcome” and “We are honored to have you” at the Lightway Academy in Abuja.

Harry and Meghan’s trip to Nigeria isn’t ‘A-list’, it’s a distraction King doesn’t need, says expert

They were given necklaces of wooden beads and serenaded by dancers and singers – with one doing a backflip.

Inside, children from the kindergarten class danced and sang songs for the royal visitors.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex also took microphones and gave speeches about the importance of taking care of mental health.

As Harry handed over the microphone, Meghan said: “Do you see why I’m married to him?

“It’s so inspiring because he speaks the truth.”
