PRINCESS Kate told her closest friends she would use a new name before getting engaged to Prince William, a royal expert claims.
O future Queen is said to have wanted to ditch the informal “Kate” for a more regal moniker and sent a “humorous email” to her friends informing them of the change.
In a new biography about the royal mother of three, Robert Jobson said the name change took place in 2008, when speculation about the couple’s engagement reached fever pitch.
She reportedly told her inner circle that she would be known in the future as “Catherine” rather than “Kate.”
He wrote: “It was unclear whether she disliked being called ‘Kate’ or whether this was part of greater preparation for her formal public role as Prince William’s future wife, but it appears she had a genuine desire to use her full name.”
The name change “only added to the speculation” that Prince William was about to pop the question, says Robert.
William finally proposed to his wife in 2010 and they married in April 2011 in a fairytale wedding watched by millions of people around the world.
After the nuptials, Kate became formally known as Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.
She used this title until September 2022, when she was given the new title of Princess of Walesfollowing the death of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Previously, Princess Diana held this title.
Prince Harry opened up about Kate’s name in his bombshell memoir of Spare, and claims King Charles asked her to change the spelling of her name.
He claimed that the monarch wanted Catherine to be transformed into Catherine so that she would not come into conflict with Charles or Camilla.
He explained: “This was because there were already two real ciphers with the letter C – and they didn’t want another one.
“There were already two royal ciphers with a C and a crown above: Charles and Camilla. It would be very confusing to have another one.
“Do Katherine with K, they suggested.
“I wonder now what came of that suggestion.”
Prince Harry remembers reaching out to see what Prince William’s reaction was to the name change.
He added: “I turned to Willy and gave him a look that said ‘Are you listening to this?’ His face was expressionless.”
Kate ended up using her preferred spelling for her official title, although many refer to her informally as Princess Kate.
