PRINCESS Kate made her long-awaited return today, appearing in public for the first time since her cancer diagnosis.

And although her appearance was highly anticipated by many, the Princess of Wales was keen to divert attention away from her, according to body language expert Judi James.

She explained that Kate, 42, was keen to ensure her father-in-law remained the focus during Trooping the Colour.

Judi explains: “In a tradition created by her husband’s grandmother, Kate’s body language here showed the world what it’s like to be a royal: elegant, calm and stoic, without a hint of self-pity or drama.

“Kate’s nonverbal messages seem to signal a smiling determination to reassure the public and her own children and to get on with the work.

“She made it clear in her written message that this is a step toward return, not the beginning, but even from the glimpses of her in the carriage, her straight back and signature smile showed a desire to show resilience and poise.”

And Judi says Kate’s outfit choice may have been a deliberate attempt to divert attention from herself.

“There was a touch of discretion or perhaps a desire not to overshadow the way the brim of Kate’s hat was angled to partially hide her face in the carriage, but there were some smiles and some smiling conversations with her three children,” she adds.

“His wave to the crown involved closed rather than open fingers and was a quick, subtle movement of recognition, again suggesting a desire to avoid stealing attention at the king’s birthday celebration.”

It is the first time the princess has been seen at a royal event since Christmas Day.

The Princess of Wales, 42, announced on Friday that she would return for the Monarch’s birthday celebrations after undergoing cancer treatment.

The princess will also watch the parade before standing alongside the king, heir and other royals on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

Adorable moment Charlotte tells Louis to ‘stop’ as he dances to the song

Loving husband Wills said yesterday he is “pleased” Kate is returning to work and projects that “are important to her”.

A spokesperson for Wills said: “The Prince is pleased to see the Princess beginning to engage with the work and projects that are important to her.

Prince Louis’ comic relief

Judi adds: “Louis probably executed what had to be one of the family’s most revealing ‘announcement’ messages. In front of his mother and alongside his sister, he informed a worried nation that they were a group free from tension and stress.

“Louis posed with his hands behind his back in the classic ‘best behavior’ pose of Prince Philip, his great-grandfather, but like Philip, he couldn’t help but show his more playful side.

“A huge, exaggerated yawning ‘roar’ was his first sign, but then he started dancing a little to the music, causing Kate to laugh and Charlotte to offer what appeared to be a scolding.

“If Louis is feeling happy and comfortable enough to be as playful as ever, then we can probably relax and enjoy these first glimpses of Kate as well.”

“He will continue to focus his time on supporting his wife and children while continuing to fulfill his public duties.”

Charles was also “delighted” that his daughter-in-law made her return on her big day.

The Monarch said: “Her Majesty is very pleased that the Princess will be able to take part in tomorrow’s events and is looking forward to all elements of the day.”

The mother of three has not been seen with the royal family since last year’s Christmas Day at Sandringham.

She was taken to hospital for planned abdominal surgery in January and spent 13 nights at the London Clinic before continuing her recovery at home with her family.

Days later, Kate bravely released a video revealing that “post-op tests found that cancer was present” and that she had started preventive cancer treatment.

The princess said the diagnosis came as a “huge shock” – but promised: “I’m fine and getting stronger every day.”

Ahead of Trooping the Color today, she said: “I have been overwhelmed by all the kind messages of support and encouragement over the last few months.

“It really made a big difference to William and me and helped us through some of the most difficult times.

What is color trope?

Trooping the Color or ‘The King’s Birthday Parade’ is a military ceremony dating back to the early 18th century or earlier, when battalion colors (flags) were carried (or ‘trooped’) through the ranks so that they could be seen and recognized by those soldiers. Since 1748, this parade has also marked the Sovereign’s official birthday.

The honor of trooping their color rotates between the five Foot Guards regiments and, this year, it goes to Company number 9 of the Irish Guards. The Irish Guards were created by Queen Victoria in 1900 and provided almost 125 years of service to the nation.

This year marks the second Troop of the Color of Her Majesty’s reign. The King took part in his first Trooping the Color in 1951, aged three, traveling in a carriage with his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, and his aunt, Princess Margaret. The king first took part in the parade as Colonel of the Welsh Guards in 1975

“I’m making good progress, but as anyone undergoing chemotherapy knows, there are good days and bad days.

“On those bad days you feel weak, tired and have to give in to resting your body.

“But on good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of the feeling of well-being.”
