The Princess of Wales smiling and standing shoulder to shoulder with the King was a clear message to the world that her return is a family affair.

Everyone’s eyes may have been on Kate yesterday at the King’s birthday parade, but it was a mother in her most important role – that of loving mother and member of a loving family.

The princess was doing exactly the same in public as she did behind the scenes – focusing on her children, ten-year-old Prince George, nine-year-old Princess Charlotte and six-year-old Prince Louis.

Kate has always considered her role as a mother to be the most important thing in her life.

She knows that the way she raises her children will have a profound effect on the future of the royal family and the entire monarchy.

Supporting her husband William and father-in-law Charles is also part of this fundamental role.

Kate may have made it seem like it was easy to appear in public after six months.

But it would take a lot of mental effort and energy to do this.

She wanted the world to know that she was back – not back to work, but back to her role as a royal mother and a princess.

She wanted us to know that she was getting better.

But also that the focus is on the children.

It would have been a huge incentive for them to have the mummy in the carriage and on the porch with them as if nothing had happened.

And her actions yesterday made her an icon to millions, if she wasn’t already.

Kate has had an extremely emotional impact because of her battle with cancer.

As wonderful as your life seemed, with all its privileges, we now know that it is not.

She suffered the fear, loss and agony of illness.

She was brave enough to face life and move forward.

But it hasn’t been easy.

As she said in her letter to the public: “I have good days and bad days.”

Yesterday Kate showed the world how brave she is.

And the world stood by her – just as she stood by King Charles, who is also battling cancer.

This act elevated her to almost iconic status.

Kate’s appearance at Trooping the Color is confirmation that she is facing uncertainty with strength, grace and dignity.

Its appearance was not by chance.

Kensington Palace managed it carefully to make the biggest impact with the least amount of exposure.

As always, Kate looked magnificent.

Her hair was tied into a neat bun at the back of her head.

For a moment I thought she was wearing one of Diana’s outfits.

‘Subtle, elegant and discreet’

Diana once wore a white dress with a black and white striped bow at her hip during a royal tour.

It was Kate’s nod to her predecessor — and the line of succession — and it felt very fitting.

Proudly displaying her regiment’s Irish Guards brooch, the Princess also acknowledged duty as well as family.

Significantly, Kate’s position on the balcony alongside the king served to underline the fact that her appearance was supportive of the family.

Having his beloved daughter-in-law by his side was as important to him as it was to her.

They had been hoping for this to happen for several months, but it depended on their health.

Everything could have changed at the last minute because of their health. Trooping the Color is also a matter of duty.

It’s a great day for the Armed Forces and a great day for Britain.

It is also a time to demonstrate the importance of the continuity of the royal family in the modern world.

But ultimately, the Princess of Wales’s appearance was a family affair, not just for her children, but also for King Charles and the kings who will follow him.

As Prince Philip once said to Diana: “The monarchy is not a popularity contest, but something for the family to unite.”

Kate did this yesterday, but was careful not to upstage her husband or the king.

She was subtle, elegant and discreet.

And in doing so, she stole the nation’s heart even more and we love her so much for it.

SHE IS MY FAIR KATE

THIS was a brave return to public life for Catherine, who has battled cancer valiantly in recent months.

She didn’t need to be in Trooping the Color and no one would blame her for staying away. But she still chose to attend.

It is a measure of how much her duty and her family mean to her. She looked very well and, more importantly, very healthy too.

It was lovely to see her exchanging warm words with her father-in-law, King Charles. Both fought hard to return to their duties.

There were many elegant outfits on display, but the Princess of Wales’ stunning white dress was a cut above all the others.

This was a remarkable return from a remarkable woman and I’m sure it would mean a lot to have her family by her side.

So it’s no surprise that she hasn’t stopped smiling the entire time.
