The King and Pince of Wales have sent messages of condolence to the England team after they lost 2-1 to Spain in the Euro final.
The Prince of Wales told the England team: “This time it wasn’t meant to be.
“We are all still very proud of you” in a social media post following the defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
The King also sent his condolences and praised the team for their efforts.
He said in a message to Gareth Southgate: “While victory may have eluded you tonight, my wife and I join all my family in asking you and your support team to keep your heads up.
“Everyone who has participated in sporting activities, at any level, will know how desperate such a result can be when the prize is so close – and will join me in sending the most sincere condolences, whilst congratulating Spain .
“But know that your success in reaching the European Championship final is a truly great achievement in itself, and one that brings with it the pride of a nation that will continue to roar for the Three Lions today – and in the many triumphs that I have no doubt that we have ahead of us. Carlos R”
England missed the chance to win their first major trophy since 1966.
The Three Lions equalized after Cole Palmer came off the bench and scored.
However, this was not to be, as Spain took the lead again with just four minutes of normal time remaining.
Gareth Southgate’s men walked a tightrope throughout the tournament, falling behind in all four qualifiers.
England were weak for most of the Euros and were completely outclassed for the vast majority of the final.
There may have been late heartbreak, but this was not a case of glorious failure.
Spain have been far superior in the last four weeks, while England have survived for a few moments.
Three Lions captain and striker Harry Kane looked distraught after being substituted 61 minutes into the game.
He was replaced by Ollie Watkins, who scored in the 90th minute against the Netherlands in the semi-finals.
Kane was seen with his head in his hands after struggling to get into the game, which Spain were leading 1-0 when he left.
Before kick-off, Gary Neville suggested why the Three Lions’ talisman was not at his best.
The ITV commentator said: “He doesn’t look good physically, that’s what I would say, but I think he can play. He’s the best striker we’ve ever had.”
Colleague Roy Keane added: “I think when he’s dropping deep, with no sense of position, he looks a bit slow.
“I think your positional sense [has been fine] It’s just that its sharpness isn’t there.”
Neville continued: “I think in the next few weeks, or maybe even sooner, you will find that he is getting ready to take the field.
“He doesn’t look good and it has something to do with his physicality, it has nothing to do with his understanding of the game.”
It comes after a BBC commentator left Alan Shearer stumped after he spoke about Álvaro Morata’s career.
