Tokyo 2020 bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain crashed out of the Paris Olympics after losing to China’s Li Qian in the women’s 75kg quarterfinals at the North Paris Arena on Sunday. With Lovlina’s 1-4 result, India failed to win any medals in the boxing events in Paris. After the defeat, Lovlina spoke to IANS and expressed her disappointment at not being able to recreate the heroics of the previous edition. “I’m having a hard time accepting this defeat because I couldn’t achieve what I thought I could. I have to see where I was lacking in the contest, if I had known in advance where I was lacking, perhaps I could have been champion,” Lovlina told IANS.

In addition to the disappointment with Lovlina’s elimination, many fans were frustrated with the outcome of Nishant Dev’s quarter-final fight against Mexican fighter Marco Verde, as the Indian dominated the first two rounds, but the fight was judged 1- 4 in favor of the opponent.

Many fans questioned the transparency of the boxing scoring system that Lovlina addressed during the conversation.

“Boxing is a different sport, it is difficult to understand what is happening in the game, as you may feel like you have won, but it depends on the judges’ perception of how they score the fight. You can’t really say what’s right or wrong, you just have to accept it,” she added.

The 2024 Paris Olympics have been bittersweet so far for India, with many athletes putting up incredible campaigns but missing out on medals in crucial clashes. However, one of the biggest stories of the opening fortnight was that of Manu Bhaker.

The 22-year-old became the first Indian shooter in the history of the Olympics to win a medal when she claimed bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol event. She followed her historic victory by becoming the first eventing Indian to win two medals in a single edition of the post-independence Olympics, when she teamed up with Sarabjot Singh to secure bronze in the 10m air pistol mixed team and narrowly missed out on her third by finishing fourth in the women’s 25m Pistol category.

She also received the honor of being India’s flag bearer at the tournament’s closing ceremony. Lovlina expressed her joy for Manu and thanked him for bringing “pride to our nation”.

“I’m so happy for her. She did what we couldn’t do at these Olympics and winning two medals is an incredible feat, so I want to thank her for keeping our nation proud,” concluded the 2020 Tokyo Bronze medalist .
