Paris:

International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach spoke about Indian grappler Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the women’s 50 kg freestyle wrestling final at the Paris Olympics and said they will “follow the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS )”. Vinesh was supposed to compete against Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of the United States of America for the gold medal, but was disqualified on Wednesday for exceeding the weight limit by just 100 grams. Following his disqualification, Phogat requested the CAS to award him the silver medal.

The decision to award Vinesh Phogat the silver medal following her disqualification from the women’s 50 kg wrestling final will be taken before the end of the ongoing event, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced on Friday.

In a statement, the CAS said: “A request was lodged with the Ad Hoc Division of the CAS at 4:45 pm CEST on 7 August 2024 by Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat (the Applicant) in relation to the decision taken by United World Wrestling (UWW) to replace her, because of her failure at the second weigh-in, before the gold medal match of the women’s 50kg freestyle competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which was due to start at 18:15 CEST on the same day (the Challenged Decision) .”

“The applicant initially requested a decision from the CAS Ad Hoc Division overturning the contested decision and ordering another weigh-in before the final match, as well as a declaration that she would be declared eligible and qualified to participate in the final. However, she did not do so . request urgent provisional measures The CAS Ad hoc Division procedure is quick, but it was not possible for a decision on the merits to be made within one hour, considering that the Respondent UWW (United World Wrestling) would have to be heard. . quickly, the procedure is, however, ongoing and the Applicant confirmed that she intends to annul the contested decision and that she requests the award of a (shared) silver medal”, adds the statement.

At a press conference, Thomas Bach said that you cannot have two silver medals in one category. He added that International Federation regulations must be followed.

“If you ask generally about having two silver medals in one category, then my answer is no. There are International Federation regulations that must be followed and the International Federation, United World Wrestling, was making that decision…,” Bach said.

The IOC President concluded by saying that in the end they will decide the CAS decision.

“Looking at the federation or everyone who has to make this decision, when and where do you make the cut? You say that with 100 grams we can do it, but with 102 grams we can’t do it anymore? it is in the CAS, in the end we will follow the CAS decision, but, again, the International Federation has to apply and interpret its rules”, he added.

Following his disqualification from the Paris Olympics final, Phogat announced his retirement from wrestling on Thursday.
