Rai Benjamin anchored the United States to victory in the men’s 4x400m relay at the 2024 Paris Olympics in Paris on Saturday. Benjamin, the gold winner in the 400m hurdles, helped the American quartet of Christopher Bailey, Vernon Norwood and Bryce Deadmon to an Olympic record of 2 minutes, 54.43 seconds. Botswana, with 200m champion Letsile Tebogo in the fourth stage, won silver with an African record of 2:54.53, while Great Britain won bronze with a European record of 2:55.83. The US team’s 400m individual gold medalist in Paris, Quincy Hall, was not a starter in the relay.
Botswana’s Bayapo Ndori put the African country in the lead after the first leg, with Great Britain briefly leading before Bryce Deadmon scored a great third leg for the Americans.
When the baton was passed to Benjamin, Tebogo was right behind him and stayed there until the finish line. But Tebogo’s shorter sprint pace was not enough to overtake the American.
